Premenstrual Syndrome(PMS)

💡What is Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a collection of symptoms that occur before menstruation and, in some cases, may continue into the menstrual period, causing physical and emotional discomfort.

It is referred to as a syndrome because it includes more than 150 possible symptoms. During a single menstrual cycle, a person may experience more than one symptom at the same time, and the combination, intensity, and duration of symptoms can vary from cycle to cycle.

💡Why does PMS occur?

The exact cause of PMS has not yet been fully understood. However, many scientists believe it is related to hormonal fluctuations. After ovulation and before menstruation begins each month, changes in hormone levels may lead to various physical and emotional responses.

PMS symptoms can generally be categorized into three types: external physical symptoms, internal physical symptoms, and psychological symptoms.

Common discomforts include abdominal cramps, lower back pain, headaches or migraines, fatigue, mood changes, water retention and swelling, diarrhea, constipation, breast tenderness, oily scalp, acne, anxiety, and more.
