Menstruation does not stop during natural disasters or war. Among relief supplies, period products are often the most overlooked, yet they are what With Red knows best. During times of crisis, we strive to leverage our expertise and swift action to offer support, extending Taiwan's warmth and solidarity to every corner of the world.
When the Russo-Ukrainian War broke out in 2022, we launched an emergency menstrual supply drive to support Ukraine. We collected around 20,000 packs of period products, delivering them swiftly to Ukraine and neighboring countries through Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This effort directly assisted those displaced by conflict, ensuring that menstruators are supported, even amidst the turmoil of war.
When the devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria in 2023, we also mobilized an emergency relief drive for period products. Together, we raised funds to purchase around 5,000 packs of period products and collected direct donations of 718 packs of pads and 79 boxes of applicator tampons. Standing alongside the people of Turkey and Syria, we worked to ensure that one of the most frequently unseen needs was met in the wake of a catastrophe.
In the global movement for menstrual justice, we often feel that voices from East and Southeast Asia have long been overlooked. Compounded by Taiwan’s unique international situation, participating in major international conferences and advocating on global platforms can feel like scaling a world-class rock face alone—deeply challenging and high-pressure. Yet, with every foot climbed, the view becomes infinitely broader and infinitely rewarding.
Ever since our founder, Vivi, established With Red from her student dorm in Scotland in late 2019, taking our mission to the international stage has been one of our core goals. We will continue to leverage our expertise and impact to proudly share this story of a Taiwan-born menstrual justice movement with the world.
In 2022, we were invited to attend the inaugural Global Period Poverty Forum (GPPF) in Brisbane, Australia. Alongside parliamentarians, government officials, UN representatives, scholars, and advocates from Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, Canada, and Zimbabwe, we worked together to formulate the global roadmap for menstrual justice over the next two years.
By 2023, these efforts began to blossom. With Red founder Vivi was invited to the Menstrual Justice Salon, where she engaged with Scottish Members of Parliament and leading international scholars—serving as the sole expert representative from a non-Western nation.
We have also continued to present our research and initiatives at prestigious international platforms, including the NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW) and the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research (SMCR) conference in Washington, D.C.
Through these forums, we offer policy recommendations, analyze the implementation of ongoing policy, and share insights from Taiwan’s experience as a reference for global menstrual justice organizations. Step by step, we have brought the movement that began in Taiwan to every corner of the world.
